If the MPLA Wants to Eliminate the FNLA, It Can Do So Today

Holden roberto

According to growing speculation, if the ruling MPLA (People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola) truly wanted to eliminate the FNLA from the political scene, it could do so immediately. Years of internal divisions, weak leadership, and electoral irrelevance have left the FNLA vulnerable and marginalised. Some observers even suggest that the party, if suspended or disbanded, would end up humiliated — forced to plead for legal revalidation just to remain in existence.

This grim scenario no longer feels far-fetched. For many Angolans, watching the downfall of one of the country’s historic liberation movements would be both tragic and symbolic of how far the political balance has shifted. The humiliation of the FNLA, should it come to pass, would not be an isolated event — it would be a reflection of Angola’s troubled democratic health, where dominant power often overshadows pluralism and fair political competition.

What remains to be seen is whether the MPLA will take that final step — and what it will mean for Angola’s political future.
