In a solemn ceremony held on Thursday morning in Luanda, Angola’s President João Lourenço posthumously awarded the Military Palm Medal to former Heads of State António Agostinho Neto and José Eduardo dos Santos. The highest military distinction was conferred as a mark of national recognition for their service and lasting impact on the country’s history.
António Agostinho Neto, a revered figure in Angola’s struggle for independence, served as the nation’s first President from 1975 until his death in 1979. As a military leader with the rank of Army General, and widely celebrated as the “Founder of the Angolan Nation”, Neto was instrumental in guiding Angola through its early years of statehood following liberation from Portuguese colonial rule. His medal was received by his widow, Maria Eugénia Neto, who stood visibly moved by the tribute to her late husband’s legacy.
José Eduardo dos Santos, who succeeded Neto and served as President from 1979 to 2017, was also honoured with the Military Palm Medal. Holding the same rank of Army General, dos Santos is often referred to as the “Architect of Peace” for his role in ending the country’s decades-long civil war in 2002. His widow, Ana Paula dos Santos, accepted the award on his behalf, in recognition of his contributions to national reconciliation and post-war reconstruction.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Lourenço emphasised the symbolic importance of honouring past leaders who played decisive roles in shaping the modern Angolan state. “This distinction is not only a tribute to two historical figures but also a reminder of the sacrifices made for peace, unity, and sovereignty,” he said.
The event brought together government officials, military representatives, and family members of the honoured leaders. The Military Palm Medal is one of Angola’s most prestigious decorations and is reserved for individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the nation, particularly in the defence and consolidation of its sovereignty.
The posthumous honours serve as a moment of national reflection, recognising the complexities of Angola’s political history and the leaders who navigated it during turbulent times.
