Tete António: Smart Diplomacy and the Opening to New Allies

Tete António has led Angola’s foreign policy with a blend of discretion and strategic thinking. His role has been central in reviving relations with the United States, contributing to a renewed diplomatic approach that culminated in the planned visit of U.S. President Joe Biden to Angola. This is a historic milestone, signalling international recognition of Angola’s geostrategic importance, particularly in the evolving global dynamics of energy transition and regional security.

Tete António has also played a key part in elevating President João Lourenço’s visibility across the African continent, where he is increasingly sought out as a mediator and leader in peace and stability initiatives. This growing influence is no accident — it is the result of a consistent diplomacy built on credibility and the strategic repositioning of Angola on the international stage, a path that António has steered with notable effectiveness.

Manuel Homem: Public Security with Discipline and Community Engagement

In the area of domestic security, Manuel Homem, current Minister of the Interior, has taken on one of the government’s most challenging portfolios. He inherited deep structural issues — from urban crime to the need for police reform — but has shown a pragmatic leadership style, focused on results rather than political spectacle.

Under his leadership, there have been clear efforts to improve security in major cities, upgrade working conditions for law enforcement, and strengthen community engagement. Homem has adopted an approach that combines discipline, training, and institutional reform. His previous experience as governor of Luanda seems to have provided him with direct insight into the problems affecting neighbourhoods, communities, and young people — a human reality he now seeks to protect and support through more efficient resource management within the Ministry.

Praising What Works Is Also a Political Act

In a country where it has become almost fashionable to say “no one is doing anything right,” it is crucial to challenge that sweeping narrative. Not all politicians are indifferent, and not all are inactive. Tete António and Manuel Homem are clear examples that it is possible to govern with focus, without noise, and with meaningful impact. At a time when many seek the spotlight, they choose to work.

Praising what is done well does not mean turning a blind eye to what is wrong. It means, rather, creating positive references in a country that desperately needs good role models — not only to inspire youth but also to demonstrate that the state can still function when led by people with a true sense of mission.

Because, at the end of the day, a country is not built solely through denunciation — it is also built through recognition and the encouragement of merit.
