Luís Montenegro came to power without clear ideas. And, not long after, we already see that he didn’t bring a plan either. He brought a rear-view mirror and a megaphone: he lives in the past and shouts clichés. Lost, he tries to lead with the oldest trick in contentless politics: blaming immigrants. When solutions run out, enemies are invented. Montenegro speaks as if immigrants were Portugal’s problem — when, in fact, they are part of the solution. They are the ones working in hospitals, in agriculture, in construction, and in care homes where few Portuguese want to be.
While the government searches for scapegoats with accents, it ignores the real issues: low wages, collapsing public services, and a youth without prospects.
There is no economic plan. No structural reform. But there are fiery speeches and winks at Chega’s voter base.
Montenegro’s lack of vision is so serious that he’s already started copying Ventura’s glasses.
He wants to win Chega’s votes, but only manages to lose his dignity.
He says he defends the “national identity”, but hides the national reality: unchecked corruption, slow justice, structural poverty, and a political class more concerned with keeping their perks than serving the people.
Instead of confronting problems, he prefers to confront the weakest.
But a country is not governed with fear. Nor with hatred. It is governed with courage, with ideas, and with truth.
And that, Montenegro has yet to show.
